My father taught me to listen
My father, a great lover of music and sound. He’s a bass player and sound technician. There were several moments with him when I had the opportunity to learn, especially about how to listen.
Once I was listening to Rush at a medium volume. My father entered the room and said “We must listen to Rush like this...”and started making some adjustments to the equalizer and the volume of the stereo. A pressure came that really expressed the band's attitude. I felt what rock meant.
The lessons behind listening sometimes came unexpectedly. I asked him "Dad, does Peter Frampton play the guitar well?". "Play his record and listen. Then you tell me what you think," he replied. He reinforced the importance of attention in listening, but also considered my freedom in what is an aesthetic analysis of subjective value.
From these and other experiences, it became clear to me that silencing and listening is a door to recognition. It means appreciating reality, gaining references and behaving better musically, despite thinking that this reverberates in other spheres of life.
Today I feel very happy with this habit. Shutting up and actively listening to music and people makes me an eternal student.
Thank you very much, dad!
